Medical Abortion Checklist

1. Be Certain You Are Actually Pregnant

This may seem obvious, but when you’re worried or in a hurry, it’s easy to make quick decisions before confirming you’re truly pregnant. A home pregnancy test is a starting point, but it isn’t always accurate.¹

For the most reliable results, a lab-quality pregnancy test combined with an ultrasound can confirm whether you are pregnant and help clarify what’s happening in your body.

You should never take the abortion pill without confirming pregnancy, and it should only be taken under medical supervision to ensure your safety.

2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development

About 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.¹ A positive pregnancy test alone can’t confirm whether the pregnancy is still developing. An ultrasound provides essential information, including:

  • Whether the pregnancy is viable (not miscarried)

  • How far along you are

The abortion pill is FDA-approved for use through 70 days (10 weeks) gestation,³ so knowing your exact gestational age is important before considering medication abortion.

3. Make Sure This is Your Decision

Pregnancy brings big emotions and big decisions that affect you physically, emotionally, and socially. With people around you offering opinions, some urging you to continue the pregnancy and others pressuring you to end it, it can feel confusing and overwhelming.

But ultimately, the decision is yours. No one has the right to pressure, coerce, or threaten you into an abortion.

If you’re feeling pushed into a choice you’re unsure about, A Choice to Make Resource Pregnancy Center offers a safe, supportive environment who will listen without judgment. We’re here to provide clarity, not to tell you what to do, unless that’s what you need in the moment.

4. Know The Risks

Abortion is a medical procedure with physical, emotional, and spiritual implications. Understanding the risks beforehand helps you make a grounded, informed decision.

Testing and treating an STI before an abortion is important. During a surgical abortion, the cervix is opened, which increases the risk of an untreated infection spreading. For example, untreated chlamydia can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which may result in complications such as ectopic pregnancies or infertility.⁴

It’s also important to know that medication abortion is irreversible. Some women feel relief afterward, while others may experience emotional distress, grief, sadness, or regret. Everyone’s emotional journey is different.
